dmb, tempting as it has been over the last 10 weeks she's been here looking after (= organising our lives, rearranging the house, etc) ,you are so totally right about that.

Niste, how long does it take you to get your house back in order after your mother(smother)-in-law's been through rearranging everything?

Does yours buy you knick-knacks and doilies that she expects you to decorate your kitchen and bathroom with? Or put on other already knick-knack and doily laden shelves? And you know she was doing it to be sweet and you're touched but at the same time you would never put those things out because they re-define chintz? But you put them out anyway because you don't want to hurt her feelings? What's the minimum time they need to be out to save feelings, do you think? I'm asking because I'm starting to be over-run with this stuff.

Also bedding. The shelves are over-flowing. Last time she was over she started clucking that my shelves were too full and disorganized and that no woman can live that way, but I couldn't tell her to PLEASE stop buying me that stuff!

Just a little rant. These home visits are trying, to say the least....

When we got married a load of doilies of varying shapes & sizes, matching his 'n' hers bathrobes and the full range of towels came with my wife as part of the cheyiz, which I think roughly means 'dowry' (haven't looked it up). While the latter two groups of items were quite welcome, the doilies were another matter and were laid out ritualistically on any flat surface available...but only for a couple of weeks, and mostly for visitors. I think it's about time to.. er.. mark your territory and dispense with all but the most desirable doilies when mum-in-law calls. A big one in a prominent place ought to suffice...
