I'm curious to know how many English instructors are former soldiers. No reason, just interest. Cambodia used to receive quite a few, possibly more than other countries. Well, step up to the plate, ladies! (NB: This is not a scientific survey.)

Alas, we ex-Marines are the victims of such stereotyping. Why, so many of us are gentle, meek and quite non-violent. I assure you that, before wupping anybody, I always challenge them to an arm-wrestling contest first - loser has to " modify " his classroom behavior ( fortunately, I haven't lost yet ).

Dear grahamb,
Nope, just got in last night ( after about 30 hours on planes and in various airports - but going east to west has always meant little or no jet lag for me ). I spent the " glorious 4th " in Riyadh ( odd there were no fireworks displays, but, considering what's been exploding over there recently, perhaps just as well ). So, I consider today my " personal Independence Day ". Ah, it's nice to be able ( among other things ) to walk outside in shorts.

I was in the military (paid for my schooling with the GI bill). After a month in Graf sleeping in a tent in the snow, wearing a gasmask to the latrines, too cold for a shower for weeks, with the p-29 (can opener--did I get it right John?) and c-rations as my best friends--Nothing about ESL bothers me, this is heaven. Glad I did it, glad I don't have to do it anymore. Wink

In addition to TESOL teachers who were actually in the military,there are also some types who PRETEND they were in the military,like one of my former housemates who claimed all kinds of glorious exploits during his"military service" during the Korean War.Only one problem...he would have been only four years old at the time....
