Hi Web fishing and Qatar chic,
Yeah, you would think with a lucrative Saudi Arabian salary I should have it all saved up by now. Trust me, it's just not so cut and dried as all that.
I am managing to put away some for the $$$$ for property. It seems by previous posts and from what I have learned so far the best bet is to pay it all in cash. I was just curious about loans and if it were possible to obtain one; to speed up the process cuz am eager to have a home base. (and yes be in debt again but would be great to have that place to go to every summer and holidays)
Like qatar chic it is still good to investigate and look around. I am rather nomadic at the moment and have to say that traveling during holidays/ school breaks are the big reason for shortage of cash. I guess if I stayed home and never went anywhere and was miserly I could have bought something a few years ago LOL Just not my style.
I guess for the next few years I can continue to enjoy looking around.
If I find any more "proper property" information I will pass it on.

CMP yeah it's funny, most people think that just because you live in the Gulf you make a fortune! It's not necessary the case. But salaries are higher than elsewhere, I admit that..... |

It's in Ecuador. House and farm land for something like$50,000. They said they fell in love with Ecuador after their first visit. I never been anywhere in S. America, I couldn't tell you how lovely it is. It would be ideal to purchase property in S. A. since I'm American. The commute from the US would be less than going to India, and a lot cheaper.  |

Ecuador is lovely, trust me. I'd be wary of property prices, though, as the economy isn't what you'd call stable. It's riding high, on high oil prices, right now, but most experts say the oil will last less than 25 more years. Then, plummeting awaits. Or maybe sooner, as last weeks protests, shutting off oil production, show. The value of anything in this country can go down, or less commonly, up, at the drop of a hat.

I have seen property in Fez- located amongst hills and streams for around �20, 000...around humm in $...I dunnno you could check on xe dot com
Get this, in the UK you get a teeny weeny apartment, with one bedroom and prices start from �90, 000 and people wonder why Brits move abroad to buy property.....  |

You can buy houses in France and Spain for 20,000 quid or so, in the countryside.
Never mind 90,000 for a one bedroom apartment. An old work colleague of mine sold her STUDIO 'apartment' (basically a large bedsit) which she purchased from her Local Authority for 12,000 under the 'right to buy' scheme, which was located in Forest Gate (a drab area of East London), for 95,000 pounds in 2002. I couldn't believe it...
The house prices in London are just unbelievably crazy. Now you have to be rich just to buy a family-sized house in the most rundown area.q |

Yup-It would be impossible to buy a house, even on the TEFL wages of teachers in the UK! |

Even on a good wage, let alone the pathetic amount TEFL teachers get (about 12,000 quid a year)!
My parents bought their place in 1976, in Hackney. Not a great area, but the house was 4 bedrooms, big garden. They were part time teachers. They just sold it for 280,000, and it wasn't in great condition either.
To buy the same place now they'd have to be earning around 60,000 a year each. It's simply got much harder for those in average-paid jobs. |

and on top of that you have council tax, and then tax after tax after etc ......where does all the money go in the country? Don't get me started  |

Seven years ago when I started graduate school, my parents bought me a one bedroom apartment in Manhatten for $145,000 [excellent deal]. Now that apartment [on the market] is worth $400,000. I rent it out for $2100, and use some of the money to support my travels. I will never sell [I think], if ever I decide to settle in NY I would live in the apartment.
Old run down homes in "ghetto" areas like Harlem are running $500,000 to 1million I think Clinton putting his office up there might have helped. Property around the New York University area is pretty much untouchable. If you are lucky, you can find a studio [usually much less than 900 square ft.] to rent for $1500 a month (and don't forget the deposit money, security, brokers fee... so add another $6000 you have to pay up front just to move in). The whole thing is crazy if you ask me.
