Can anyone tell me if this 6-month ban that the U.A.E. has decided to scrap affects English teachers. I have heard that if one had a Master's degree before, the 6-month had no affect anyway. But generally speaking, does this recent change in policy affect us at all? Thank you for your feedback.

It's a complicated situation and I'm not sure how it affects private employers. The Ministry of Education can still request that any of its departing employees be banned and there's still a no-poaching agreement that prevents any employee of HCT, ZU or UAEU being employed by any of the others within a year. Both of these can be overcome if the right people can be persuaded, but it's not easy.

But not necessarily the "influential family" kind of wasta: I was thinking more of the institutions persuading the ministry officials. ZU has had to do that a couple of times for locally recruited teachers.

To me 'wasta' doesn't always require an influential family. It is just knowing 'who' can oil the wheels... Often wasta is knowing which of the clerks can move the papers. Often it is the fact that your Indian secretary comes from the same city in India as the clerk at the Ministry.

Just like everywhere in the world, it is mostly a matter of knowing the right person... Not that it doesn't hurt if my 'Sheikh' is bigger than your 'Sheikh.' Laughing
