hi y'all,

i'm considering some public school jobs in the southern texas area, and was wondering if anyone could offer some wisdom. i.e. What's the major difference between san antonio and austin as far as general life, things to do, night life, social scene, etc.... thanks for any help!

I visited San Antonio in April for the TEFL conference. Loved the Riverwalk, but other parts of downtown looked as if a mini-recession had hit. I think there are quite a few job opps, tho, and its easy to get around by car. No traffic jams, even at rush hour.

Austin...we drove through, its a different kind of place, students and (probably) lots of govt. employees as it's the capital. Didnt stop, but I recall there WAS a lot of traffic. I think SA has more of a Hispanic feel, Austin more of a good ole Texas boy feel.

San Antonio is one of the largest and fastest growing cities in Texas. Expect there what you would expect to find in any major city.

Austin is big, now, too, but not that big. I drove across it in about an hour - at rush hour - one day last summer on my way from Kerville to Houston. It's essentially a university town with the additional discomfort of being the state capitol.

Both are good choices. If you're into music, Austin can be quite lively, and there are plenty of interesting things to do and see in the surrounding countryside. Same for San Antonio I expect, though it may not be as "musical".

The "university town" feel extends to politics, as Austin is the center of liberal politics in conservative Texas.
As of 2000, Austin had a population of 656,600 people, making it the fourth-largest city in Texas and the 16th largest in the United States.
If you have doubts about "fitting-in," Austin is probably the place to be. The movie "Slackers," about overeducated, underemployed misfits was set in
Austin, and with good reason.

I lived in Austin years ago,
But the public transportation seems to have got BETTER, if anything.
The buses are cheap and plentiful. If you work for the government or teach at the University, fares are FREE. I used to work downtown, and what you can do in that situation is drive to a secure parking lot across the river and take the "'Dillo" into downtown for free. It's really easy to get around.
Plus, the town has a good vibe to it. I've only visited San Antone, but given the choice between the two, I'd pick Austin again.

CDaniels:

just to set the record straight, that movie is titled "Slacker", a great movie directed by Richard Linklater. There is a more recent movie called "Slackers" which has nothing in common with the first one.

Austin is one of those places that was cool many years ago. It has now gotten too big and too expensive...
