I think I'll apply for the JET programme, and if I'm unsuccessfull I'll spend a year hacking away at my student loan.
Maybe I'll start playing the lottery too. |
I have heard of people being on the JET program and paying of CAN$40,000 loans in 3 years. That means putting aside about a third of your take home pay and spending the rest on rent, utilities etc.
It is possible to save money on JET, airfare is paid for and sometimes the Board of education will pay some of your rent as well. Its one of the better teaching gigs around if you have no experience, and they actually prefer "green" people on the program. |

lol - I dropped out half way through the final year of an engineering degree - for much the same reasons as yours.
Stay and finish your degree. It will never be easier, and you can always do whatever you want afterward.
I suppose my main motivation for leaving was the temptations that accompany a high income and good prospects. Even though I knew that I didn't want it, given the option it would be extremely difficult to pass up all that money for more interesting things. Additionally, a certain kind of female is attracted to men with good career prospects, and frankly I'd rather stick forks in my eyes than live out my days bearing the slave mark (thumbprint on the forehead) of such an insidious, soul-destroying, beautiful creature (Hi Rebecca! ).
Being a ne'er-do-well and a layabout (which is a vocation, by the way - or even a calling) I couldn't face the banality of a 'successful' yuppie suburban life. I do, however, value education, so I've struck a compromise wherein I now study something completely and utterly useless, that no one will ever pay me for (philosophy). Now I can be smug in my erudition as I wend my wastrel way through this terribly relaxing life.
As that old chestnut goes, "I've spent most of what I've made on wine, women and song (ie partying). The rest I just wasted.
Good luck with the big decision. |

looks like I'd be better off contacting the student loans company while I'm TEFLing and allow them to dock my wages to avoid the interest and hope there's enough left over to save for a rainy day. I think the average interest in 10 a month, so it's going to suck paying them say 30, and having only 20 actually make a dent in the loan...
I'm glad I'm not into big name brand clothing! |

Depending on where you travel you are going to get hit for bank fees when you send money backhome. In Japan I will spend about the equivalent of 15 pounds on bank charges to transfer money. The best Idea probably is see if you can get a credit card and get the bank to charge your card and you pay the card debt of in local currency and you dont need to use banks.
Another idea and I have seen this done with mortgages is get your salary DC directly into the account where your overdraft or bank loan is kept. You then draw on it for living expenses using a cash card or a check book and any money you dont spend each month goes in paying down the loan. |
