What is your favourite destination to unwind and celebrate the end of the teaching day or week?
Are you a high flyer and relax by enjoying the view from your local on top of the State Tower...or are you one of those costcutters who sit on those stools in Khao Sans roadside bars?
Maybe your local is the normal run of the mill expat Irish bar?
Personally Gullivers in Suk soi 5 does it for me.....wall to wall televised sport and frequently changing eye candy wandering around. |

Holy jumpin' catfish Batman!
Next to Applied Sociolinguistics, Phonology &
Ethnographic and Interactional Discourse Studies,
this is for sure my alltime favourite subject.
When I first arrived in Bangkok, I made all of the obligatory visits ...
Soi Cowboy, Nana Plaza, Patpong, Khao San Road, even RCA out on Petchaburi.
I wasn't all too impressed, to be totally honest.
Too many Katoeys, generally overpriced ...
and just too aggressive for my blood.
I prefer 'low key' establishments where the people are real,
the music is loud, and the beer is plentiful, cold & cheap as dirt;
bars where you can dress down, get down, fall down, and pee in the grass
or drop your cigarette butts on the floor without raising an eyebrow.
On my little Soi there's just such a place.
In fact, it doesn't even have any walls.
It's basically a home-made shack with a tin roof,
2 dozen beat up old tables & plastic chairs, a cement floor,
a variety of meat dangling in large hunks behind the glass counter,
a 'squatter' toilet (with running water!) and a monster karaoke box that really kicks a$$,
all wrapped up in blinking Christmas tree lights & burning incense,
held together with a few pieces of string and a gluestick.
It even boasts its own resident contingent of local b.i.t.c.h.e.s. -
real dogs, I mean - who like to rub up against my feet.
Don't ask me why; must be a dog fetish thing.
Because it's so hilariously primitive, I couldn't resist the temptation ...
and nicknamed it The 5 Star Bar & Grill, and that nickname has stuck.
Just like in the old sitcom "Cheers" - everybody there knows my name,
what I'm drinking, and to light up a couple mosquito coils when I arrive.
I get a large bottle of Chang, a bucket of ice, Silly Fools* at concert decibels,
great (hot) Thai food, and plenty of good conversation with the locals -
and the beer's only 50 Baht, including ice.
CHEERS !!!

From this day foreward, let it be known
that Dave's member brewsterbudgen
shall be known as "Cliff Claven" -
with all the rights, responsibilities &
privileges that this honour confers.
Actually, that's one of the nice things about hanging out in 'low key' places.
If you happen to run into a sexy 'Diane' at the 5 Star,
you can be reasonably sure that she's a good girl. |

I'm afraid I have some sad news to report today. Brace yourself.
I just learned that the husband & wife team that manage the 5-Star
are closing up shop & moving back to Isan tomorrow. Apparently ...
they were operating without a license or biz registration,
and 'the man' finally caught up with them.
9.11, the tsunami, now THIS !!!
I can't take it anymore.
Let us all bow our heads in a moment of silence. |
