Hi
We are two experienced, degreed, CTEFL certified teachers looking for work.
We are a Canadian couple, new to Istanbul and have offers from Berlitz, ET and some of the usual suspects but have heard bad things so aren't sure what to do. Haven't heard from anything but the big chains yet and have been looking for over a week.
If you know of any good schools looking to hire a couple please PM.
BTW we need to make at least 1500YTL per month each due to financial commitments at home (those damn student loans!)
We are willing to relocate within Turkey.
Thanks |

The two bucket shops you mentioned are neither good nor will let you earn what you need. Beware that one of the bucket shops also owns other bucket shops under different names.
If you get a PM from one of the bucket shops take everything she says with a pinch of salt. |

I don't work for a bucket shop and it is not true that these teachers can't earn 1500TL/mo. Most teachers earn more, depending on how many hours they work. Savvy posters should take everything here with a pinch of salt, though in one poster's case (not me), it might have to be a handful. |

We are actually really REALLY considering ET as our best option. If we didn't NEED to make our monthly payments they are truly the BEST option we have so far. We are experienced so we would make enough money there per hour. They are actually one of the better paying options we've found! If we KNEW we would make our hours, we'd probably do it. I have heard from people who love it and people who hate it. SOoOOoOOoo hard to decide! |

The fact that they are your best bet so far says it all for the state of the language mill market here. They have reduced it to its lowest level yet.
You can earn that much a month if you are only counting the good months but in the summer and in months with holidays and there are a lot you won't earn that much over a year. If you could earn that on average over a year then they would offer you a proper monthly salary. Who do you think benefits from hourly pay? Why do mostly newbies only work for hourly pay? Why is the turnover so high? |

Why do you still work there if it is so bad? |

If it isn't so bad why don't you go back and work there? |

That sounds quite desperate. So why do you have to defend them when you know what they are doing
Challenges in TEFL? Don't make me laugh. The simple past again. |

ET probably isn't many people's idea of the perfect job, but for those coming into Istanbul for the first time, it would serve as a useful stopgap to cover that awkward feet-finding period prior to somewhere more permanent. A couple of months there probably would be sufferable. If you don't like ET, move on. Fairly obvious really. |

31, spelling the word 'challenge' correctly is a challenge for me. |

A couple of months? Who would sign a contract and then do a runner after a couple of months? |

It was quite exciting, especially when Warne got 3 quick wickets.(Apologies to all but the men's thread is locked. Why? I have no idea.) |

I agree DMB ... it's certainly a pity the men's thread is locked ... we have to comment elsewhere on Rangers' 3-0 drubbing at home by Hibs. |
