I have one copy of my original diploma and it is laminated. I have heard conflicting reports on wether or not you can posess it the entire time you appy for the ARC. SOme schools demand it. Others say you can give over a copy as long as you bring the original to show. I have also heard about getting copies certified in your country but the NY office won't give you a visa at all if you ask for certified or translated copies of your diploma so that's really not an option.....I wonder what the real law is on this. I am sure others would like a definitive answer too. I am not handing over my pasport or diploma in its original form to anybody.

Schools expect to see the original diploma and make a copy of it from my experience.

As for the passport. For those arriving on a visitor's visa the school will take your passport to get the visa switched to a working visa during the ARC application process. That covers most people as far as I know.

Chris is correct on this.

The government places the onus of verifying that you have a degree on the employer. So although it is up to the employer to decide how they want to do this, you will find that most reputable schools will ask to see the original, take a copy for your application, and then hand the original back to you. Schools do not need to retain the original nor does the government ask them to do this. The original is yours and you should keep it. Yes, some schools will accept copies but they are leaving themselves vulnerable and I wouldn't recommend any school that accepts a copy alone.

NB: Due to recent concerns with false degrees and online qualifications, there are some cases where the CLA has requested to see the original documents themselves. It appears that this happens when certain overseas institutions are targetted due to past problems. My advice in these cases would be for you to take the time to take your original yourself to the CLA offices, and not hand it to the school.

Passports are a similar situation. The school does not need to keep the original. They do need to copy every page of your passport and you need to sign each page to verify that it is yours. You should keep your actual passport. The only time that you need to hand in your passport will be to BOCA for your visa.
