Hey guys, I arrived yesterday morning, moved into my new apt in Recoleta, promptly blew the fuse in my plug adaptor, got lost for awhile, took a much needed nap, and then consumed an enormous steak at a restaurant on Pacheco de Melo simply called Melo, which was cheap and fantastic-if youre in B.A. you check it out. Anyways, Ive got a couple of questions for B.A. veterans. The first is in regard to my blown plug adaptor: where should I go to get a new fuse, and if that doesnt work, where am I able to buy a whole new adaptor? If it helps, Im living on the corner of Pacheco and Ayacucho. Secondly, do any of the internet cafes offer internet access for your laptop? The ones Ive perused thus far seem to want you to use their computers. And lastly, are any of you expatriates planning on meeting up any time soon? I start the EBC TEFL course on Monday, but right now I know no one in this city. Thanks guys.

Disregard final question. I just read Carlos-Englands post. Whoops.

Disregard question about fuses too. After walking around for hours asking "fusibles?" like an idiot, I stumbled upon a boon--this hole-in-the-wall television repair shop.

But if possible, somebody please help me out with the wireless question, as my laptop may be my only instrument for financial gain if I cant get enough hours after the EBC program. And working in this little cubicle all day, I feel like Im trapped in a deadly cross between Office Space and a Latin American sweat shop.

Hope to see some of you on Monday.

I have the same question about laptops.

Are there cafes with WIFI or Internet cafes with the ability to connect with a laptop?

HiTaylor,

did you manage to fix your "fusibles", fuses, wifi?, these things that get you nervous especially when youre in another country for the first time. ive got similar stories to tell about my encounters with "fusibles", but never mind the asado post of gauchito is a lot more interesting to pursue than my fusible experiences.

Hey-

In that area, you probably have more wi-fi options than just about anyplace in the city (Puerto Madero and Palermo also are good places to look).

The easiest thing to do is probably go to your nearest Cafe Martinez.

I spent a LOT of time at these damn places in my first two months here. Now that I finally have an apartment and wi-fi of my own, I don't think I'll ever step foot in a Cafe Martinez again. They're fine, but I just OD'd on them at the beginning is all.

The wi-fi is "free." Yeah, the place is overpriced, but it's pleasant enough and you can spend as long as you want there and no one cares (I guess that's true of pretty much everyplace here, really).

Besides Cafe Martinez, BN Cafe in your neighborhood (check guiaoleo.com.ar to find it) also has wi-fi, though I'm not their biggest fan overall.

A few Cafe Havanna locations also have it. Last time I checked the one on Santa Fe at Billinghurst (I think -- double-check me) also had wi-fi.

Here's a list of Cafe Martinez hotspots I pulled off their web site (www.cafemartinez.com.ar):

Talcahuano 948
Vte Lpez esq. Montevideo
Libertador esq. Oro, Scalabrini Ortiz esq. Cervio
French 3131
Solar de la Abada
Santa Fe esq. Uriarte
Bulnes esq. Charcas

I might be forgetting some other places, but this should be a good start, no? Hope it helps.
