There was a article in today's Hurriyet about the increase of rents in Turkey. It compared 2005 and 2004. In most towns and cities the increase was 10-12 %. most of Istanbul was between 20-60%. Kurukoy(?) had a 78% increase. This due to the F1 track. However, the biggest increase in Istanbul was Fatih with 82%. Why is Fatih the highest, what's the attraction?
However it wasn't the highest in Turkey. That was Izmir Mekez with 92%. What is so special that has happened in the centre of Izmir?
(ps the figures may be a little out as the paper is in the office and I'm finished for the day, and I'm cra.p at remembering numbers. I've had the same cep number for over a year and I still forget it sometimes ) |

I live in Kozyatagi/Sahrayicedit ... about 100 metres from the Yeni Sahra footbridge over the E5 ... great location ... can get to Kadiky by dolmuş in 15 minutes ... easily get out on to the TEM ... can't see the cars on the E5 and can't here them, so proximity to E5 not an issue ... the main thing I can see from the window here is the trees in the back garden ... I can quite understand why more people want to live around here :-) |

Izmir merkezi could be due to proximity to the Aegean coast, all that lovely foreign money flowing would inflate land / property prices where (presumably) a lot of the business gets done. A lot of property-related services would want to be based there which would push the rents up. Yes, it's a woolly theory but the best I can do at this time in the morning.
No idea about Fatih, though. |

my student said it was because Fatih has become the new capital of Turkey. All the goverment live or come from there.
He suggested the same reason as Niste for Izmir. |
