I would like to recommend a book for those interested in things Turkic. I was lent this book some years ago and have just come across a copy and am re-reading it. It is a love story set in post war Baku and Ali is an Azeri and Nino a Georgian. Kurban Said is the pseudonym of the author who was a Jewish resident of Baku. The book was ''discovered'' in the 50s and the latest copy I have has an introduction by Paul Theroux.

Anyone read it?

Edited to correct two errors. It was an introduction and not a foreword and the introduction is by Paul Theroux and not Theraux. Apologies to Henry Cowell and many thanks for pointing out my errors.

I've read it. It was very interesting in its decriptions of life there and then. A sweet story as I recall.

31 and Molly? It reminds me of Rosemary's Baby. Laughing
31, there's more to reading books than looking at the pictures. Wink

Surely Paul Theroux spelled his name correctly at the end of his foreword?

Sorry to go off topic on the thread that you started. But what ever happened to your Oxford learners' dictionary and scrabble board? Still use them?

I do have an OPL dictionary and a couple of scrabble sets from way back but I have not used them for ages.

Chalk and talk is what I do in class.

Chalk and talk has its place at certain times. Sometimes you have to throw the communicative, guided discovery book out the window. You may even need to use L1. Controversial or common sense?

Off topic but I have just been able to get a copy of:

Mao The Unknown Story by Jung (Wild Swans) Chang and Jon Halliday

I have only just started it but it is amazing.

I consider books a necessity rather than a luxury and I do not go out much.

Not into extra much but LOVE draught efes or efes in bottles.

I agree with ekmekparasi that bottles are so much better than cans and that bottled efes is a different brand to efes cans.
