I've got an interview lined up with HCT soon. Ready for the firing squad i hope. Does anyone know what how the benefits work if you have i 5 year old child? How much does one end up paying for schooling?

Is 12, 000/13,000 the going rate if you have a Masters and 10 years experience?

Thanks. The interview has just been confirmed. I have been trying to find a thread on the types of interview questions and what they are looking for.

Can any one suggest something.

There have been 5 or 6 or more threads on that topic...

Most of the previous threads have been about how bizarre HCT interviews can be, so I wouldn't advise looking them up!

They have the usual general questions like "Why do you want to come to HCT?", "What do you think you can offer us?", but they also usually have a few questions about conflict management - "Have you ever had an experience where a class was difficult to manage because of discipline problems? How did you deal with it?" or "Have you ever been in a situation where you found it difficult to work with a colleague / manager? How did you deal with it?", questions like that..

They also usually ask a question like "How would you teach ...?" The one that did for me was "How would you teach the present perfect tense?"

One thing I always look for in interviewees, and I suspect HCT interviewers would appreciate it, is details and examples - a half-hour of generalisations usually won't get you very far. Try to give some specific examples from your own experience - your favourite teaching activities, materials, things you encourage in your students, etc.

Finally, be sure to show that you've done your homework on what HCT is all about - mention something you've picked up from their website, for example - and always have something to ask about the college, the students and programmes, not just salary and conditions.

Good luck, and please let us know how you get on.

If a candidate answered there are only two tenses in English-past and present. There is no so such thing as present perfect tense.
1) how would you react?
2) do they have a chance in h@ll of a second interview/job.
Disclaimer- not my answer.

My own answer was "I wouldn't" - that didn't get me very far. We don't ask that question in ZU interviews. The answer you suggest would need a bit of follow-up questioning to find out whether you were just a nit-picking pratt or you had a relevant point to make. In your case, of course .....

Laughing Laughing

He got you there dmb!!

But seriously, if one actually wants to get the job and there is a question like that, you are better off not being too flippant. The esoteric debates of the grammar mavens are not terribly appropriate for the classroom. So while you may want to touch on the debate in the interview, they want to know how you teach your students to cope with it.

Hey that wasn't my answer. But a few months ago I was interviewing someone and that was his answer. I told him we used Cutting Edge and in the course book it was a tense. He then proceded to slag off the course book... it was linguistically unacceptable to misinform students.. blah blah blah

I didn't employ him.

dmb... I know nothing about that coursebook, but I agree with you. I wouldn't hire someone who didn't know that you wait till after the contract is signed before you start attacking the materials and management. Rolling Eyes Laughing
