The Ibadi sect in Oman is considered to be the most liberal but they do not represent the entire Moslem population of Oman, the other sects are present here also - this is because of past migrations from Baluchistan and Iran. There is a certain degree of religious toleration here but uncertainty lies with the bureaucracy and you can't be sure what will be passed by Customs.However, in this country, I have heard of many things that have gone missing from shipped luggage - CDs and DVDs are popular targets and sporting books and magazines (football/soccer and car racing are favourites).
In Muscat, there are some good bookstores such as the Family Bookshop where you can buy books on a whole range of topics so you might find something here that will interest you but I would advise caution on what you choose to bring into this country (the important thing is to respect the culture into which you are coming).
Regarding censorship, I do know that films can be heavily censored at times.

I would only add one thing to Zakiah's response. I consider the Ibadhiyah to be a conservative, not liberal sect of Islam, but Omanis of all sects are very tolerant of other religions. That is what makes it such a pleasant place to live.

As to the list of books that you wish to bring in, their passing through customs will depend on factors beyond our knowledge or prediction. I wouldn't take anything that you could not comfortably lose.

Censorship of books is very changeable. For instance, Theisinger's book, Arabian Sands had always been available in English. Then, it was finally translated into Arabic a few years back - and was quickly banned. ?? After a few months, it re-appeared in both languages.

If you think a book may cause problems, leave it home.
