I picked up a friend at Atatrk airport and he was a bit upset at something that happened and I wonder what you all would make of it and what you would have done in this situation.
My friend arrived on a half empty flight from the Gulf. There was a little bit of hassle on the flight as there were a number of blokes who had been drinking and bothering the hostesses. There was a Turk of about 30 who was very well built, like a weight lifter with a statuesque Australian woman of about the same age. When my friend got to the visa window the two were in front of him. They got a visa for the woman and then the Turk in a loud, angry, beligerent voice shouted:
'Pick your s hit up. This is not your country.'
My friend realised that he was talking to a young Arab of about 17. The youngster never said a word and appeared scared and overwhelmed. The Turk then repeated what he said menacingly and said:
'I will talk to the police.'
The youngster picked up what appeared to be just a scrap of paper and the Turk and the woman went to passport control. Nobody else said anything.
My friend felt that he should have said something like 'he is just a kid' or 'it was just a scrap of paper, everybody litters here.'
What would you have done? Was it because he is an Arab? Doesn't everyone drop litter? |

It is just the little things that intrigue me about this place. |

There are ja-k a-ses everywhere and with people like that there is no winning. Whatever is said to him will only start a fight after which Mr.Ja-k a-s will just lie to security/police and walk away feeling satisfied. |

What annoyed my friend was why he had to say 'this is not your country' straight out of the film Romper Stomper that was set in Australia and the fact that the Turk had, we guess, come from Australia. Also the woman said nothing and nor did anyone else. My friend felt cowardly and cannot account for the ugliness of the situation directed at an Arab kid. |
