I just finished Ali and Nino this summer. Great book, wonderful descriptions of life in turn of century Baku.

Interestingly enough, a journalist for the New Yorker just published a book, "The Orientalist" which tracks Kurban Said's life. It's really fascinating so far, very thorough history and really well researched. The author is Tom Reiss.

I will check Amazon for the book about Kurban Said.

The Mao book is staggering. I have only just started it but it turns everything that was thought about Mao and Post War China on its head.

Not into extra much but LOVE draught efes or efes in bottles.

Quite a few years ago, I met a Australian who wrote the "where to drink" section of the Rough Guide. We were staying at the same hotel in Antalya. He was a self proclaimed alcoholic, but good fun. He took me out to many drinking holes "to see if women would feel comfortable there".

During this particular year, he refused to drink any bottled Efes that was stamped "July". He drank so much beer, that soon the hotel manager started to refuse beer stamped "July", because they took up too much room in the fridge.

This same man finished each day with a bottle of raki, (after which he passed right out). He was 72 when I met him, and as of last summer, he was still alive and still drinking Efes and Raki. He must be around 76 now.

For example, at the moment my fave song of all time, after a phone conversation with my boss, is 'Fight the power'. Yip, I'm a big fan of old skool hip hop

At the moment I have Green Day in my head. It's weird. I'm a little ashamed.

Grrrr... Evil or Very Mad

On the other hand, it's better than last night when I had 'su gibisin' looping for hours, made worse by the fact that 'su gibisin' is the only part of the song I know the words to....

Yesterday morning it was 'Suffragette City.' In the afternoon it was something by White Stripes. Yesterday was better than today.

At least, when written, they were intended as songs. Not like that crazy frog.
A phone tune number one in the UK, what is the world coming to?

I still kind of like the Axel F tune-- takes me back to when I got this little electric keyboard that I wanted oh so much for Christmas, and I worked out how to play the Axel F tune on it. That, and the synthesizer bit at the beginning of 'The Final Countdown' by Europe.

I admit I have a soft spot for late 70's and early 80's butt-rock, glam rock, and hair bands. Nothing like a monster ballad to remind me of Little League baseball games, pining in my 9 year-old way for Devon Peterson as he played for the opposing team.

The frog, however, troubles me. Friday night I was watching 'Kidzshow' on MTV, and I came close to killing the TV after the frog made his 30 billionth appearance... Kidszshow is pretty good though...
