I was recently told
"... the visa regulations have changed since July of this year. If you go to China on a tourist visa you will not be able to have your visa converted to the work type visa after you arrive. It is even difficult to convert the visa in Hong Kong these days."
Is this true? I haven't seen any reference to these "regulations" anywhere else. Anybody know more?

I wouldn't believe anything you read on this forum, as there are hostile users with multiple log-in names that can mislead. Find out directly from the Chinese government or their agents if you can. |

I heard the same thing back in January. However, I came to China on a tourist visa and it has been converted to a work type Z visa. To be more specific, the Z visa/residence permit that is now used and placed in your passport can be secured in China after entering on a tourist visa, depending on which province you are in.
Jiangsu is one province that will secure work visas/residents permits, expert certificates, etc... in country. Other province may not give work visa/residence permits to foreigners. See the following thread for more info:

Like Taishan said, contact your local PSB and ask them if it can or cannot be done.
The Jiangsu Province number is 025-83526706. They will tell you it can, if you have a BA degree and the school has the proper status to employ foreign teachers.

I believe it all depends on the province you're in. I came in on an L visa and my uni didn't have any problems changing it to a Z visa after i entered China. It took them about a month to get it sorted out but i'm not aware of any problems. I remember some people talking about how tough it is to change visas in hebei province but then again.... |

Rellio, the information you quoted [see above] is not accurate in several particulars, in the experience of our posters, as expressed in their detailed, factually based reports to this forum.
The situation is both more varied and complex- but understood in more detail- than the material you quoted.
One of the more important factors, the province will you be working in, has already been called to your attention, on this thread. Other particulars are developed in the thread suggested by AmandaBarrick. Take time to read it, you'll see what I mean. |
