My girlfriend and I are moving to Taipei in early November. We have been teaching in Hanoi since May and are ready for a new city/experience.
Hanoi is a great place to teach, decent money and cheap living expenses, but, alas, it is time to move on......

I need to know the must haves for our arrival to Taipei...namely

VISA situation/work permits, best approach? There appears to be plenty of debate on the subject in this forum.

What is the weather like in November and how quickly does it turn to winter?

What kind of pay should we expect. I hear it is nearly double of Vietnam , but again, this appears to be subject to debate.

Can anyone recommend or warn against any schools in Taipei?

Where is a good pub to meet expats when we arrive to get first hand information?

Will TET affect the availability of good teaching positions before February?

How much should we expect to spend on a decent and comfortable but far from luxurious apartment. Are apartments easy to come by?

Can you name a good and comfortable hotel that is cheap where we can reside before securing more permanent accomadations?

Any and all information is welcome and immensely appreciated.

Cheers,

Kevin

There is debate about this but you will likely find that any long termers, or others who have worked here legally will recommend arriving on a 60 visitors visa and just be a tourist until you find some work. Once you get work the government accepts the visitors visa to be changed into a resident visa for the purposes of work and you don't need to leave the country to do this.

Not sure how mush you earn in Vietnam, but in Taiwan you should expect to start out at NTD550-600, maybe a bit more if you have experience. You can probably expect to get about 18-25 hours a week at most jobs.

I know of a list of schools in Taiwan that offers a rating of schools listed including a blacklist of bad schools and a greenlist of good schools. It seems that this might be exactly what you are looking for. Unfortunately it seems that a member of this forum may have taken exception to me mentioning the name of this site here as it may be seen as 'free advertising' even though that site offers this information to you free of charge. So I can't tell you the link for the site but if you click on the signature at the bottom of my post all will be revealed. Oops! Did I give it away!

There are plenty. You will have no trouble finding them. A bit more free advertising but not for the site that I am associated with so I assume that it is ok. You could try this site or this site for pub information.

What is TET?

Depends on a lot of things but anywhere between NTD15,000-25,000 for a reasonable place in Taipei. Cheaper elsewhere. Plenty of places available but Chinese ability will prove to be a must. There is a housing service but as they charge a small fee I assume that it may be considered as free advertising if I mention their name and we can't have that! Oh bugger it - the place is called Tsui Mama, but again you will need Chinese ability. Your school will generally help you sort this out.

That might be too much like free advertising (I would call it advice or a recommendation but some obviously don't agree) Laughing

You are a colonial. The colonial era is over. Man, this is killing me.
