Hello!

I am currently living in and teaching ESL in the state of Jalisco. I will be visiting Mrida in 2 weeks: partly vacation and partly a discovery tour. If I like it as much as I think I will, I want to relocate within the next month or two. I love Mexico, and have lived and traveled a fair amount in Mexico. Can anyone help me with some possible contacts / leads / hints on where to begin job hunting? I realize this is not the best time for teachers to job hunt, but I would be willing to wait until I find the right opportunity.

I speak Spanish, have a BA in Spanish, an MEd in foreign language education, and a TEFL certificate. I have about 4 years experience teaching Spanish to English speakers and about a year of experience teaching English in Mexico.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you could offer. Thank you!

I don't have any contacts but I just wanted to tell you that Merida is wonderful. You'll love it! Playadelsoul or Mixteca Mike might have some suggestions.

Hi.

Merida has a lot of universities and language institutes. There are two Harmon Halls, a Berlitz, and a Instituto Benjamin Franklin for starters. PM me and I can give you a name.

It is a wonderful city, and I would move there in a heartbeat, if I could keep the same job.

you need to do a search of Ben Round de Bloc's posts. he has pretty much covered it all for the last several years.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Matt. However, I really haven't been keeping up with the job scene at private language schools. There seem to be lots of new little language schools opening up all over the city. I know of a couple of schools that are (or at least recently were) looking for part-time teachers who have experience preparing students for the Cambridge exams. Also, I recently heard about a couple of private prepa-university EFL jobs that were available. With a bit of luck, time, and patience, I think a teacher who had qualifications and experience could put together enough working hours to survive on here.

Sorry, the most I could say about Merida is that I had a nice stay there in 1995. And it is (was) a good place to get flights to Cuba.
