hey guys
does anyone know of anyone who is selling a slightly used bed or a stove? we need both, and possibly a bunch of other things. i've read about bio bio but i've also been told that they sell really ugly things there so i just wanted to double check with fellow teachers out there.

It's not that Bio-Bio has ugly stuff. It's just that you have to search a bit to find exactly what you want. There is quite a variety. It's best though to only bring the necessary money, it's not the safest of areas for gringos. But, there's also much worse.

look at the STA travel on Padre Aguirre or at the bagel shop (NY Bagels) on Flor de Roger for ads by gringos selling stuff. Also some of the hostels. People often put up signs right before they go, and sell their used stuff. To me bio bio is hit and miss, with a lot of stuff that's not great, but some really nice stuff. New is usually cheaper than used, which is more antique-y. You can make a great coffee table out of used coffee crates found on the street, if that's your style.

Don't forget to look at Sodimac (Home Center) which is near Nyuble (spelled with tilde, don't know how to find it here) on the green line, or at Parque Arauco, or Easy, which is at the mall at Bellavista de La Florida (except I think you get off the stop before Rodrigo Arraya or something, you can see it from the metro on your left side, the next stop is yours). At these places you can get those foam foldy couch chair mattress things, mattresses, plastic drawers, particleboard plus veneer stuff that you can assemble, like desks, computer desks, bookshelves, entertainment centers, etc. They also sell cheap stools and the occasional table, and building supplies. Home Center is basically home depot (if you're from the states), and Easy is more like Target (again, US reference) plus a little home depot thrown in. You can get a flete guy to take you back to your house plus your stuff for about 6 lukas, depending on where you live. Or you can do the delivery thing, but flete is same day and you just ride with the guy in his truck.

Some stuff at almacenes paris or falabella isn't that expensive, if you poke around, like a foldy futon frame for less than 100,000. Not cheap, but maybe more comfortable than those foam things that fold out, which are like 40-50.
