The uncomprehending 31 doesn't realize that the term TEFL is wide indeed. It includes unsuccessful, unhappy and dead-end losers like himself. But it also includes highly successful, extremely well qualified, ambitious, and (yes) happy campers like some of the rest of us. 
And to get back to the topic of this thread: The self-loathing and low self-esteem of certain interviewees is immediately apparent on the telephone. It sends a signal to the interviewer that the candidate is suitable for only the most demeaning and insulting jobs. |

thanks everyone for your advice and thoughts. but there is no preparation like experience- what a nervous bungle!
i'd like to try to clear something up. when i read through the thread, i realised that i had opened the door for a bit of razzing. a good reminder to be more careful about what i say/write.
i'm sorry if i pushed the wrong buttons and unintentionally caused hurt feelings.
when i said 'nothing going on at home', it wasn't meant to be a jab at anyone or to incite jabbing. it was a tongue-in-cheek awareness that being a foreigner (traveller/expat/refugee) often provokes the question "why is this person here? don't they have responsibilities at home?" so by saying 'nothing going on at home', i guess i meant 'nothing that will go awry due to one's departure'. its a HUGE privilege to be able to choose to leave home and travel/resettle. as for escape departure, hurrah for spirit and courage.
and btw, i don't think teaching of any sort is insulting or demeaning. nor does any one deserve to be treated this way. like any job that involved giving (versus taking), teachers may be (perhaps too often are) exploited, insulted and generally under-appreciated. so why attack each other or perpetuate the negativity? why not focus disgruntlement on trying to improve the situation for everyone?
