Just arrived and I have to say that Taiwan is rather dirty compared to other Asian coutries, and of course generally cleaner than some too. I was in China and have been to many Asian countries...yo I've seen some stuff... So many in China told me that Taiwan is much much cleaner...but it ain't much cleaner than China...Not much cleaner if at all!!
Where is the Dirtiest place in you EFLing experience you have ever witnessed?
Personally in China once I used the restroom at a Highway 'Rest Area'...
It was so so so nasty....It was 2 wooden boards placed over a metal Pool about 5 feet Deep full of Fesis and Urine!!! I mean 5 feet of 'Shitwater'...
Also Langzhou near Xian in the west is by by far the dirtest city/town I have seen everywhere....no joke 30 minutes before reaching the Langzhou stop it looks like a Canadian or American landfill. Horrible |

Having lived in both China and Taiwan myself I really believe that China is a much dirtier place to live.
The major consideration in China is the dust from road traffic. Everywhere you go things are coated in dust. We have a similar problem here in Taipei, but not to the degree that it occurs in China.
There is of course the litter problem which is a big problem in both countries. As far as Taiwan I think that this problem varies a lot. There are certain areas that are far worse than others. In China this would hold true also, but my feeling is that the areas affected by litter are far greater than here in Taiwan, but considering the size of China and it's population, I think that this is probably reasonable.
As a side note I find it amusing in both places that they will employ people to sweep the ground free of any foreign matter including leaves and the like in some places, but just outside the fence the ground is just short of a rubbish dump.
China wins hands down when it comes to disgusting bathrooms. The stuff that you see there is just incredible. I don't think that anyone who hasn't been could ever imagine how disgusting the average public bathroom in China is.
I think that a lot of it comes down to where you live and spend your time. I am sure that there are pristine areas in China where people would be saying 'Huh, dirty! What are you talking about?' Overall though, Chinese cities are far dirtier than their counterparts in Taiwan in my opinion.
Overall, I vote for China as being dirtier than Taiwan. |

A lot of us can't vote in your poll. I've never lived in China. I've been to Beijing for a week. China is huge. Taiwan is small. You can see a lot of Taiwan in a week. You can't see much of China in a week.
Parts of Taiwan are cleaner and dirtier than others. You should see where my bedroom fits in on that scale right now. That problem will soon be rectified though. |

China has a bigger contrast in my opinion - areas of Beijing are practically spotless (well not quite to a Singaporean extent) but if you go to a more rural city things are different. Some of the toilets arent nice - just be ever so careful with splash-back! |

If you are comparing the dirtiest parts of Kaosiung to the cleaner parts of Hong Kong, then China is cleaner but that is f@##ing big stretch. |

I don't live in China.
I live on Taiwan and much of it is very filthy. Public trash cans are still a rarity on most of the island and the pollution has turned Taiwan into one big cancer cluster. |
