so sweet...I had no idea about Teachers Day...never heard of it and yesterday (because I don't work on Saturdays) the children made me flowers...out of tissue paper..they were so pretty...these are kindergarden 5-6 year olds....I was so touched....they ran up to me and hugged me and said "I love you"...such unusual affection for chinese...I was so touched...my eyes almost watered...they were so sincere.
I love the way chinese celebrate holidays - its so superficial in America ...

I forgot to get my teacher anything, and no one else in the class remembered either. I feel dummy. Sad

Some rag - probably the SCMP - said yesterday a propos the fashionableness of Teacher's Day that it is becoming an EMBARRASSMENT because students are drowning their teachers under a mountain of gifts.
It sure smacks of underhandedness because the gifts presented so early in the term must serve a specific purpose - and there always i the term end exam to think of or to fear...
Maybe next year the Teacher's Day will be a thing of the past...

Two big deal dinners

One with the VP of the university, our department heads and top staff. Pricey restaurant, great local food and lots of ganbei.

One with just our section including the staff that weren't invited to the VP's dinner. All-you-can-eat western buffet. Less formal than the VP one.

The gifts of moon cakes are starting to arrive too.
