Hello,

I am currently taking a couse at Oxford Seminars and after they have a teacher placement service. I am new to the whole travelling out of North America and have heard a lot of posts saying that you should go to Taiwan first and then find a job. I am leary about this as stated before I am pretty new to travelling as well as do not no any of their language. But the posts seem pretty persistent on the fact that you should go first and then get a job. Can someone please give me some advice as to whether I should go their first or get a job from Canada first. Any advice would be great

Thanks in advance

It depends: Do you have a sense of adventure? Not a huge one, just a slight one? Then just get over here. There are always jobs.

Are you completely broke, to the point where you can only afford the airline ticket? Then take a job from overseas, as they usually come with a soft landing. Some even provide room and board. Most places that provide soft landings will allow you to stay indefinitely in their accommondations, for a slightly marked up rent. This can help you by giving you more time to get on your feet, financially and culturally. Downside is that you'll be locked into a contract for your first year and have little choice as to how they place/treat you.

If you do decide to leap solo, DO NOT use an agent. Beat the pavement yourself. Practice demo-ing and negotiating. Take your time. It's much easier to take a job that'll make you happier in the long run, thereby making the whole visa situation easier. It's taken me 3 years to do this. I hope I have fianlly found a "home" now. So far, so good.

Really? I would advise against using an agent if you were wanting a job secured before you go. ie If you absolutely must sign something from overseas, make sure that it deffinately is with a school.
