I'm curious (in case I decide to do this) how people who arrive in Japan with nothing but a tourist visa and a few thousand dollars do it?
Do you find a rathole motel and live on instant noodles? Do you scare up some privates while hunting for jobs and meet them in coffee shops? Do you donate plasma?
How do you do it? |

Simple.
1. Find job.
2. Find apartment
3. Change visa
4.Continue working.
Do you have any specific questions ?
I arrived on a WHV and 4000$ Canadian. I think I have done quite well.
How do you scare up privates? I try to attract private lessons and then hopefully continue teaching them as my students. |

Bring an interview suit, and shoes.
Get a shared room in a "foreigner house". That will set you back $300.00 a month.
Find a job.
When you find a job and guarantor you can either return to your home country to change your visa or make a run to Korea.
When you've done that you can start looking for a pad.
I came here with no money, 16 years ago. |

Sorry, figure of speech. That's Southern US jargon for hustling and finding private students.
The gaijin houses sound like a good idea, but then if you do find a job, do they usually provide you an apartment, or is it up to you to come up with the key money, etc? |

Not only a good idea but it can be a lot of fun or it could suck, up to you.
Some offer accomadation, but they probably gouge you on the rent.
Can find housing and car out in the sticks.
Good luck to you,
