Is this crazy? Can I live off this? (I'll need a hostel, cheap food, bicycle, etc...)
If so, how long? a month? I'm concerned If i'll have enough to be happy until the 1st pay day?
Also, how long does it take to find a job in Phuket (If you're a new arrival from China with some experience, a TEFL and a 2 year dip.)
Will the school that accepts me offer an advance if I'm stuck? |

Kent is dead right on all counts.
The job scene in Phuket it really competitive especially with the local TEFL school churning out grads regularly. Furthermore, the TEFL schools have contacts locally so you'll probably not get a look-in with the jobs that are available. |

So I'm going to email out applications right away (I'll try to solidify a position before arriving). |

If that is your entire savings then as kent said. Dont. Thailand is a miserable place to be if you have no money - probably even more than your home.
Some schools will give an advance but then its so dangerous to get into the regular advance trap - you get an advance, its deducted from your salary then when pay day comes its not enough to last the month so you get an advance...........
If you mean, thats your initial cash and you have access to other funds via atm then yes, that would be enough initially. But it will disappear very quickly with all the initial expenses. |

Those posters expressing some "reservations" about your plan are just trying to be helpful.
I try to economize when I'm in Thailand and I still get through over a thousand baht a day. When you're job hunting you'll have more expenses than you would if you were just hanging out- in transportation, internet, clothes, copying things, and lots of little things you'd never have thought of.
Start up costs after you land a job are high, also, with landlords expecting you to pay the equivalent of three months in advance, if you don't find a job which includes housing.
The two grand Kent recommended is reasonable, if you are to have any margin of safety, at all. |

I'm not going to accept a job that doesn't offer free accomadation. My ATM would only bring in another $200US.
I just hope I can have something waiting for me upon arrival (job offer via the net). |

I totally respect that you're going there, no matter what your financial situation. I'll be in Thailand in 3 weeks, I'll have a bit more money than you but not much.
Here's about what you'll spend a day in Thailand.
WorldGuide Index Prices
Item Price
movie ticket Bht100.00
plate of rice and curry Bht25.00
small bottle local whisky Bht70.00
roll of 36 exposure colour film Bht120.00
4 hour bus ride Bht200.00
Average Room Prices
Low Mid High Deluxe
Bht130-600 Bht600-3000 Bht3000-10000 Bht10000+
Average Meal Prices
Low Mid High
Bht90-180 Bht180-300 Bht300-500
So just be careful how you spend your cash. Remember, if there's a will - there's a way!
Good luck! |

I think that you will find that jobs that offer free accommodation - are quite unusual on Phuket.
Unless you are teaching at the British Curriculum School (formerly Dulwich) - it's probably not going to happen.
I have to agree that B1000 a day would be a bare minimum. Even then - realize if you start mid-month - you may not even get a full paycheck your first month. What about the costs of a visa run if you need to change your visa?
Phuket is a much better job market now that it was a few years ago - with many more jobs - and the wages are improving - BUT - I think it would also be unusual to line up a decent job without being on the scene.
Sorry, just my opinion. |

Yes silly 380$
What qualifications do you have ? How are you planning to get a position that offers free accommodation in one of the most sought after positions in Asia? I am not trying to be difficult, but going to any country with that amount and no job, is just a recipe for disaster.
I m curious because I am going to Thailand this January and looking once I land. I defiantly feel this is the best method to find a good job. I have used this method in China and Japan and its has been quite successfull. One option is to setup interviews or contacts before arriving so you can hit the ground running. Plus it is more professional to contact the school before hand and request the opportunity to submit the resume.
$380.. I and I was worried about coming with $4000 Can. I guess there is a slight difference in start up cost between Japan and Thailand ! |
