In my office, we had sick days, but generally the Japanese staff used their paid leave instead because you didn't have to get a doctor's note for paid leave. (Not to mention all of the Japanese employees had 40 paid leave days that they could use). I used 2 sick days in 3 years. The first one I had picked up some projectile vommitting bug from the kiddies - highly contagious (probably Norwalk virus). The second time I had the flu and I really couldn't stand up for long periods of time because I was so woozy and queasy. My boss tried to convince me to use one of my paid leave days each time, but when I explained that I had only half the days of the Japanese employees, adn that I planeed on using most of them in order to visit my family in Canada, he understood. He was surprised to learn that I didn't get as many paid leave days as everyone else, and felt that it was unfair that hte accounting section required a sick note from my doctor. (Not that his sympathy could change policy or anything!)

I often tell people here who tell to go to the hospital (doctor) if I am sick, that if I could make it there then I can make it in to work. Like Celeste, I haven't been sick that much here, knock wood. Last year I haven't been sick at all. I even made it through the last 3 hours of work with what I later learned was food poisoning. I even made it in for work the next day still feeling a little green.

But, when I was sick, it was too bad to even stand of can't make it 5 minutes w/o blowing chunks. Since I live alone, and my friends, are all working, it won't be likely to get to the doctor. If I did what can they do. Poke me, give me me some meds, and tell me to get some rest.

I can understand the need to tell my employer as early as possible so they can find a replacement and send them out to my school(maybe a long trek). But, I being an optimist, don't plan on being sick the next day. But that's life.
