Should this be done in CHina (Mainland/HK/Macau) or upon arrival in Phuket's Airport? Does it matter?

In Thailand, itself, there are no problems in exchanging RMB for Baht. However, most of the money change booths you see everywhere are usually run by the major banks - and the exchange rates offered are usually pretty lousy. I have never been to Phuket, but in Bangkok I usually go to the 'Siam Exchange', near the Siam Centre, where the exchange rates are much better than they are at the bank-controlled booths in the Khaosan Rd area. So, in Phuket, hunt around for those money change booths that are not run by the banks.

Exchange your RMB for any hard currency, in China, if Thai Baht are hard to find. Then, convert the hard currency to Thai Baht, in Thailand.

China is the only place I've been that gives "full value" for the RMB on an exchange. I think you'll come out better by making that exchange, in China, before you come over.

If your holding RMB you'll find that it is very difficult to change it into any other currency while you are in China. I changed RMB in Thailand. I'm not sure about the rates but it was easy.

If you are documented to work in China you may exchange your excess RMB for other currencies, at banks, in China.

Exchange rates for RMB are not favorable to the holder of RMB in Thailand but, you do what you have to, sometimes....

If you have a Bank Of China ATM card it will work in the Bank Of Thailand / Bangkok ATM. Mine did.

re: Bank of China in Thailand. Is it still possible to use a card in Bangkok from China? Any updates on that?

My experience has been, worldwide, these cards work in any machine bearing the same "logo", the symbol for the system your bank and card are a part of. ATM cards often bear more than one symbol, and will work with more than one system, worldwide.

Hi there

You should be ok to use your bank card so long as it has the same logo like someone has mentioned. I.E. in NZ we have ASB Bank and our card has the PLUS sign, if your bank card has this, then you should be okay to use it anywhere worldwide.

Otherwise VISA is always a good alternative. - just make sure you have pin number and your VISA card is on credit if so you shouldnt be charged any fees - well thats what they told us in NZ anyway.
