For the long termers over in VN... how much of the language have you picked up? Did you study it before going there? Did you take lessons once there?

Also, how much French is still used over there?

Long time since this was posted, but if I can answer this for someone...

I didn't know any Vietnamese except for Xin Chao (Hello) and Cafe Sua Da (Ice Coffee with Milk) before I got here. And my pronounciation was terrible even for those. Every teacher that I know that has been here for 6 months to a year tends to speak Vietnamese well enough to do the things that they like to do and even hold a mini conversation of basic topics with virtually little studying in a formal setting. It just takes a little time to listen to the tones of the language and exaggerate the words a bit until you get it right. My personal vocab is centered around food, some basic conversation stuff, classroom things for younger children, and some bad words that are just fun to learn in any language. The grammer is getting easier as I go along, but I need to get back to studying again soon myself. Embarassed

The transition is pretty easy here as most people speak some English and the written language uses the Romanized alphabet.
