Hey everybody. I have enjoyed reading all the postings, I get the gist. I am from the US, seeking a degree in spanish, almost done. My husband is porteno. I have been to BA several times and understand the culture. As far as that is concerned, I know what I am getting myself into. Does the fact that he is a citizen change my situation with getting a work visa or atleast not having to leave the country every 3 months? Will my spanish degree make me more marketable? If the degree doesn't help, how can I make myself more in demand? If I work for privates, should I be concerned about going to people's houses? Are there any institutes that offer 25-30 hours a week so I don't need to work several jobs? What about working in a high school for a private community? ie, my husband has a friend that lives in "el country" in the Pulte homes compound. there is a private school there where they do teach english. How would the salary at someting like that compare?

Well I can't answer the majorityof the questions there!! But I doubt you'll get 20-30 hours altogether let alone with one institute. I work 24 hours altogether with 3 differnet institutes. But after class cancellations I just bank on 20 hours of paid hours.
Goodlucktho!!!

Hi there HollyJeanette!

(i) Immigration Status: Good news!! Are you married to one of us?. You are elegible for residencia permanente pursuant to art. 22 , act 25.871. You have to file your request at the DNM (Argentine INS). Remember to bring your passport (not expired), your birth certificate (remember to seal it with the Apostille), legible stamp in your passport when you entered the country. Bring a Clean Criminal Record from your country (remember to seal it with Apostille). You will also need a Certificados de Antecedentes o Reincidencias de la Policia Federal (you do that here). While in Argentina you will have to translate all these documents to spanish with a certified translator. You will also have to present your Marriage Certificate (with Apostille) . You must also give your husbands argentine DNI (id card). I think the processing fee is about AR$ 200. Once your residencia is issued, then you will get your own ID CARD (called DNI), and you can live here for ever, have bank accounts, etc etc etc.
(ii) Knowing spanish helps and makes you more marketable. You can always go to peoples houses, its normal, just use common sense.
(iii) Once you obtain your DNI, you could always work at www.teleperformance.com (call center sweatshops, asi se dice?) they hire native speakers right away.

My advice, file your residencia permanente right away. Saludos!.

HollyJeanette,
Well follow the advice of our in-house lawyer REDLEY, he knows what he is talking about, lawise that is.
Process is much more relaxed that in the US, where you have to demonstrate lots of things to the INS.

As far as I know REDLEY, Guillebaires and myself are the only porteos around the forum, so we try to help as much as we can.

As far as teaching goes there's a miriad of options, not necessary all bad, and a good few. Sheena is suffering and striving daily with classes.
Teleperformance will pay you tops, USD 300 x month. I suggest you and all to read the Buenos Aires Herald every sunday the calssifieds section, situation vacant, there are always schools or institutes looking for native speakers.
Schools in the Northern Suburbs of the city are exploding, since lots of people are leaving the city and moving to these newly developed areas and the targeted market is ABC1, so they are eager to find native teachers, the more native teachers they have, the more they can charge the parents and in order to do this they need to offer employees a good income. Now what papers will they ask from you that would be a REDLEY question.

Hope you get what you want!

And if you're married to a porteo, well, welcome to the family!!!

Cheers

Gauchito

Sheena, Redley, and Guachito, Thank you so much for the info. Redley, now I know that the legal aspect will not be an issue. Thanks for putting me at ease. Also, you need to remove the apology for your english, it's perfect and perfectly understood. Gauchito, muchas gracias por me dando la bienvenida en la familia! But, what is ABC1? My husband's cousin lives in Palermo and has told us about the housing boom north of the city but I have not been up there to see. Is the ABC1 the equivalent of high school here? Does anyone know if the hours and pay is more stable than patworking several institutes together? I guess my estado unidense degree is meaningless as long as I am a native speaker? We will be living off of our income from the US so making alot of money will not be a concern, but would like to just make enough to ease the impact of living overseas for 9 months. More than anything, I want to enjoy my work, that's most important! Thanks so much for your help!

hollyjeanette,
ABC1 means families with excellent to very good income.

Once again each school have differents demands as regards certifications, you should talk to your prspective employer in due time.

As far as ease up the impact, I think you should be fine with any income you may come up with, I will not lie to you, it is very difficult to live on a teacher's salary, but as a complement you should do just fine.

Cheers!

Gauchito

Thanks again to everyone. I can now go full steam ahead on my education as I know I am on the right track. I will follow your advice Redley on the visa issue so I will not have to deal with the nightmare of buying the return ticket, working under the table illegally, etc. Maybe I will be lucky enough to get that job with the US State Dept and be placed at ICANA. My husband has been working his ass off in the US for the last 30 years after he left BA without a dime to seek a better life. I will look forward to hangin' out in his country so he can golf and chamulla all day with his cousin. Muchas Gracias!

I looked up their website in Argentina, which in itself took some creativity. When I tried to email the link posted about applying for jobs, it bounced back. Then I tried the email address for technical support, in hopes of getting the correct email address for jobs, and it bounced back. I couldn't find any other email addresses to try. Does anyone know an actual email address that will get through this company? Or better yet, do you know if they hire Americans who speak English and Spanish, or only Argentines? Thanks.

Have you tried www.teleperformance.com.ar ?

If nothing works then just give them a call over the phone 5555 - 3000 and ask them the email address for recruiting...

As far as I know they hire people who speak english (doesnt matter if they dont speak spanish), if they are native english speakers even better....the thing is that I think they ask foreigners for work permit or of course if you are argentine you dont need that.

Suerte.
