Bnix--this forum should be limited to "integer vitae scelerisque purus."
It is not, so we must suffer. |

| I am a former Marine who served in Operation Oil Grab I, which helped pay for my education. I am also a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, having served two years in the great state of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia. Waiooooo! |

Here - here, all vote for this forum to be the exclusive turf of the macho men! Yeah!
Bash women but just let a woman say something bad about a man and well, we just can not have any of that now can we.
Military service is something we all owe a debt of gratitude for and also for peace corps. Get a piece of one of those bare breasted Yapeese women? |

Micro: I thought being prior-service disqualified one for peace corps service? Something about security clearances and such. Maybe I'm confused here... at least thats what the brochures I got 6 years ago said.
I think my 4 years in the US Air Force (902.. medical services 1990-94) prepared me for ESL... the head cases I had to work with , weird work hours, bizarre living conditions etc. "Don't sweat the small stuff.. What small stuff? It's ALL small stuff".
During a trip home for Christmas 2001, I allowed myself to be coerced into joining the Army and going to basic (Ft. Knox 1 ATB) again at age 30.(I know.. what was I thinking?!) A broken foot, refractured leg (I still graduated much to the chagrin of my drills), Med 200 and 6 months later, I'm back in ESL. Aaah, I didn't do 4 years in the AF, a BA and 4 years teaching ESL in Turkey to become a glorified gaspumper for helicopters anyways.. |

Prior military service does not disqualify anyone from service in the Peace Corps. Any affiliation with intelligence duties would be a problem and prior military will be grilled about this. Oddly, there seemed to be no real concern that I was involved with military intelligence. I know ... I couldn't believe it either.
Also, there are some opportunities to double dip. I served in an the Federated States of Micronesia which has about 60 voluteers at any given time and came into contact with at least 3 others with military experience of one sort or another. |

Sadly, I never made it to Yap. I did my pre-service training in Kosrae then went to Chuuk. Over my time in I went to Pohnpei a couple of times and, of course, Guam. I had intended to make a tour after my time was done and go to Yap and Palau, but comming to Asia via Manila was just too cheap to pass up. |

Geez, Linda, is there a thread on this board where you don't bring that up sooner or later? |

I'm another fellow ex soldier- Quartermaster Army Reserves (15 years). When was first commissioned from ROTC we had C rats. I still find the can opener to be a rather handy thing to have.
The military is required for all Turkish males and when I tell my students that I was once in the military they first look at me with disbelief and then with a little bit more respect. Of course, I tend to get about the same reaction when I remind my students that I am old enough to be their mother. For some reason Turks almost always think I am 10-15 years younger than I am and think I am closer to their age so I should be a buddy instead of their teacher. |

Last year at summer camp my bunk mate was a lovley British guy who had been in the French Foreign Legion for 5 years. The kids loved him and he was voted best and most loved teacher at the Summer camp. I remeber last year we had planned an outing with our 2 classes at Peoples Park, his class was heavily armed with water pistols, we had food, an informer told me that his class intended to steal our food, so when he was off doing something I demanded that his class must hand over all their guns as its was against the rules of the park to be armed with water pistols. They handed over the guns and I distributed them amongst my class and told them to fire. The looks of utter disbelief on their faces was priceless, that I could have lied to them. When they managed to recapture their guns boy did I get a soaking.
