Hello!
I have a question for all of you experienced ESLers out there. Does anyone know which countries (if any) offer 6 month contracts? I love teaching english in Asia and I'd like to experience as many cultures as I can before heading home. Thanks for your help!

You can find 6 month stints in Latin America quite easily. |

Hi Mike,
There are 6 month contracts available at private schools in China. They'd usually reimburse you for a one-way plane ticket after six months (and a return ticket after 12). Salaries in China are not high, but that's not always the reason people come here.
Good luck,

As Guy says, 6-month contracts tend to be readily available in Latin America; it makes it a lot easier for the school to get rid of ya if they get sick of you... |

So don't go "home."
But if this option doesn't appeal to you- there are plenty of six month oportunities in South America. Notice, though, that I say opportunities, not contacts. I often hire people on a six month basis, but due to the short commitment, they don't receive all the benefits of somebody who came on a one or two year commitment.
Regards,
Justin |

One of my former colleagues (one of my very first, in fact, in the TEFL game) came to my school on a 6-month contract and never regretted not signing up for a year, since, right from the beginning, she (and I) had the misfortune of experiencing the "double whammy" of a psychotic director of studies and a sycophantic school director who was nothing more than the puppet of the investor who had recommended him for the job (only to have his power virtually stripped after his lackey got the shove in the wake of the spate of complaints made against him because of his monumental incompetence).
Hence, a 6-month contract would not be bad to start with just in case you suffer the Shakespearean slings and arrows of having uncaring, psychotic, incompetent local (and foreign!) staff in charge who are interesting in only one thing: $$$. |
