Hi everyone,

My wife and I have recently moved to Istanbul and are desperately looking for a flat in or around Kadikoy, but we don't have the money to pay an emlak (we didn't budget enough for our move... I know, I know... foolish). Anyways, can anyone help us out? Give us advice? Point us in a direction? Thanks in advance!

hope it doesn't rain, wander the streets of Kadikoy looking for flats with signs in the window that say 'sahibden' from the owner. Take a note of the number and get someone Turkish to phone(I don't know if you speak Turkish) and arrange a visit, preferably go with someone whoo speaks Turkish.

Also ask at Bakals, they tend to know what is happening in the area. But ask your school for help. They should do it. Happy teachers make a happy school.

Alway go check out the area around Yerdemin, lots of places to rent and you can get the number of the doorman.

Thanks for the "to let" translation. The other teachers and the head teacher at my school (English Time! gasp!) have been very helpful, but we have just been unlucky in our flat search. Thanks for the advice!

Dear CoffeeSpoonMan ... 'Sahibiden' doesn't mean 'to let' . As DMB said, it means 'from the owner'. In other words you won't be paying for the services of any estate agent. 'Kiralık' means 'to let', but make sure the sign has the word 'sahibiden' if you want a good deal.
