I don't know if making comparisions between two very different cultures makes any sense at all. I have visited Korea in the past and have taught in Japan, yes they are different. Maybe it's a better idea to look at the cultures for what they are and not at what their not.

don`t know why Koreans drink a lot, but in Japan I think people like to escape or drink as a way of relaxing after too much work, etc.
It is for coping, but it is not healthy.

Korea and Japan both have the strong sempai/kohai system, and yes the stereotype is that Koreans are emotional, but I bet there is repression going on in Korea. Koreans work a lot and they live in a rigid system where if you are a junior in a company, you can get yelled at but you can`t criticize your boss.
In Japan the same is true, except if you go out drinking, then you can yell and complain, because you were drunk.

A little old lady who tears the trashbag from your grip, rips it open, pours the contents on the ground and proceeds to pick through it, seperating the glass, the plastic, second-hand clothes (which are recycled into green containers, boxer shorts included), paper and food, yelling at you all the while. You learn to start taking out the trash at 3 am.

The ones in France use a set square to ensure that your bin is at right angle to the curb and a ruler to make sure that it is at the prescribed distance from the bin next to it...

I may be mistaken, but I didn't read mention of "having to buy special city-name-emblazoned bags" and even so, i don't see any problem with paying a small fee to help recycle trash. I do, however see something illogical about playing victim when one isn't playing by the rules and properly sorting their trash and then expressing indignation at an "old hag" who shows you how to do it right, politely or not. Seems to me most know exactly what they should be doing and are in no position to blame or get angry at others for pointing out their mistakes. Why else would one have to take out their garbage at 3 am? (If one is in fact recycling properly and is still getting lectured, that's another story). Moreover, who's to say what she says or does to other Japanese neighbors just because no one else "seems" to be doing it? Why so quick to blame it on racism? (Honestly curious, hence question marks included)

This is a funny little thread. I don't really know the rules, but are we actually all hijacking this thread all over the place, away from the original topic?

But there's the interesting thing....................Why don't we say, 'The Japanese Imperial Army garbage people'?

Or as in that famous seinfeld episode about the soup nazi, why don't we say, 'The Japanese Imperial Army soup person.'

Woops....that's right....we've forgotten the Asian Holocaust, as the Japanese and their Education Ministry have also forgotten, of course.

And so I'm not a complete thread hijacker, and to sort of go back to the original topic, I think that the 'Asian holocaust' has something to do with it. Why are there so many disturbing events in Korea??

Well, a fairly intelligent dude who had been in korea a long time, once told me that Korea is like an abused child.....And there's definately a few countries I know of, that have to owe up to that.

And sadly, one of those countries still hasn't learnt. It's power structure and government anyway.
