All solid points Cleopatra. I've never been to the eastern part of Saudi Arabia so I don't have any ideas of its charms (although I guess I have heard of the oasis of Al-Hafuf). Also I had heard, possibly mistakenly, that Wahhabism had its start in eastern Arabia so I had assumed it would more conservative there.

I once taught in an IEP in California and suddenly mid-semester all of the Saudi students from Jeddah left the program declaring that they wouldn't stay in the same program at "those Riyadhis."

Actually, I don't want to be bad-mouthing Saudi at all. But Oman definitely has its charms and that's what this thread was initially about.

This is not only mistaken, it's almost the opposite of the truth. "Wahabbism" originated in the central Najd region, around Riyadh. In fact, the EP is largely, some would even say predominantly Shia (there are no reliable stats, can't imagine why...) In other words, it is perhaps the part of the Kingdom most alienated by conservative Sunni beliefs.

That's a bit extreme! But on a similar note, a large group of young women from the EP came to visit my place of work a few years ago. Many of my students came up to me and said "Oh but teacher, we don't like them. They are different from us!" Wonder what they meant by that?!?
