First of all, I am not claiming all education is worthless,or anything like that. The fact remains that a lot of degrees guarantee you exactly diddly nowadays.(Whaaaa...but...but I spent four, six fill in the blank years at university...I PAID...etc.etc.) No matter.Of course,it would be absurd to say that an education does not always help you materially, but there is certainly no guarantee that it will.
The universities(in many areas of the world) serve as warehouses to keep people off the job market. They keep all of those students studying their hearts out(well or aimlessly farting around ,as the case may be).Anyway, all of those people are kept off of the job markets, except of course the few who also work while studying, but theyare probably in the minority.

Not only do the "educational institutions "soak up large amounts of potential jobseekers, they also provide employment for the teachers, support staff,etc.etc.

So, one important economic function is the warehousing function,to siphon people off the job market. Can you imagine what would happen if only, say ten percent of them closed down, throwing their employees out of work and forcing the students to seek work?A true disaster, and not even the private schools in Taiwan could handle all of the people suddenly wanting to "teach". Hi Bnix
Yeah you're right the unis over here are just dumping grounds for some of the kids for the next 4 odd years so that they can troop out with bits of paper to wave under their employers nose and their parents can tell their neighbours that their son/daughter is studying applied horse manure at the local think tank .
At the moment I'm suffering a summer school farce where the kids are reviewing the stuff that didn't go in during the last academic year (more grammar sigh) then they take the profiency pass and go into freshman classes when they can't take notes ,write a report , or essay ,have crap listening skills, and hardly speak a word of English, sometime in the next 4-5 years they will leave and take their place in Turkish society or even worse come back here as teachers .We are just recycling more of the same old stuff and its getting worse . Now where did I leave that forklift ?
