In Hungarian, cheese is "sajt" pronounced "shyte."
The first time I ordered a "sajt burger" I felt a little uncomfortable.

We also have a brand of toilet paper called "Crepto."

Isn't there a brand of "non-dairy" coffee creamer in Japan called "Creap"?

In France, the Perrier company owns a soda/pop/soft drink named Pschitt. Wouldn't go over too well in English speaking countries. In the U.S. there's Squirt, another soda. Would you like a squirt?

In China there is some kind of stuff you drink. Supposedly it will make you grow taller. The infomercials on TV even show you the before and after pictures as proof. You can grow as much as 15cm (in height). I think it's called "Short Happy."

The Big 3 (U.S. Automakers) were getting really upset over this. They thought it was some kind of protectionist policy. They asked top-level diplomats from Washington to take up the matter with the Japanese government. The answer was quite simple: "We like to have the steering wheel on the other side."

Roger Smith, then General Manager of GM, was asked about this - why his company didn't make right-handed vehicles for the Japanese market and he responded. "That question is a red herring." More than 15 years later, still don't see many American cars in Japan, do we? How did he ever become GM's top guy? Typical of the then (and probably still now)arrogance of the U.S. auto industry.

Someone (a native speaker of Putonghua) once said to me that the original version of the KFC advert. literally meant 'good enough to make you want to bite your own fingertips off' (or a similar gloss, I can't really recall). This, apparently, was a consequence of trying to translate the English of 'Finger licking good'. I don't know if this is true and valid, however.

There was a marine engineering company which had a bit of difficulty opening a branch in Spain. Maricon, as most readers will know, is Spanish for pooftah.

(Try to read this with a valley-girl' in your head)

Like, okay, back in the day, ya know, like when I was like, totally into getting st*ned, ya know, DUDE, there was this chocolate cake-like substance, that wow, was called, 'Ho-Hos". Dude, they were AWEsome. It was kinda gnarly a name, but ya know, oh-my-gawd, they were just sooooo yummy. But, Dude, it was so hard to eat them and not, ya know, like TOTALLY laugh my a*s off. Dude!

(everynow and again, i just have to break out the old girl) Ahem..... I am much better now. It was just a flash-back, is all.

In the south (and maybe some northern states, too, but I am not sure) a chain of grocery stores is called Piggly-Wiggly. Also, there used to be a laxative in the US called "Aids" but, for obvious reasons that went off the market.

In Korea there is a flavored water drink called O2, "Human Water." We have the "sweat" drink here also. But I haven't tried it.
