i have heard several posts recently mentioning the beginning of a new term. i'm wondering what the calendar of instruction for most universities is or does it vary from one to another?

| The university I teach at started classes for the regular semester today. IWe run through until February, and then the next semester will start on Monday, Feb 27th. |

| The schedule where I work runs about a month ahead of ls650's. After a 3-week summer break, we started back to work on August 22. Classes for this semester began on September 8 and finish during the first week of February. Then we have a couple of work days without classes between semesters, and next semester goes from February through the end of July. |

I teach at a universidad aut�noma. I imagine the schedules are different throughout the country for those as well. |

universidad autonomas are basically private universities? students pay more? is there some type of accreditation system with universities in general?

Universidades aut�nomas are public/state universities. Students pay next to nothing for tuition per se, although they do have lots of other university expenses to cover (books, materials, various fees, and so on.) At the university where I teach, competition to get in is really stiff. At College of Medicine, for example, something like one in 300 elligible applicants gets accepted. For most other colleges of the university, competition isn't quite that high, but it's still up there. An autonomous university is evaluated overall periodically via a rather long-term process for a certain type/level of accreditation, and so are the individual colleges of the university. The process is bureaucracy beyond belief. |
