A PhD has nothing to do with teaching and does not claim to have. Also, what do you think you do? Just simply apply for a doctorate?!& Do you think you just walk in somewhere and get given one? You are looking at 4 or 5 years full-time study these days and then you must have your viva (which is quite scary). You are talking about it as if anyone can get one; in fact, it is not easy to find a supervising professor.

Scot47-

A GED (general equivalency diploma) is a certificate equivalent to a highschool diploma. This is for adults who, for some reason or other, did not graduate from highschool. My mother, until this week when she retired, taught GED prep and college prep upgrading courses at a community college in Canada. Her students were from all social stratas. Some of her students were former ESL students who wanted to obtain their highschool equivalency so that they could enter Canadian universities. Many were former lumber or fishing industry workers who'd been laid off from the jobs they'd had since they were teenagers (back in the day, a lot of people in North America were wooed into quitting highschool for high paying resource indusrty jobs now the resources and the jobs are drying up). She also taught a lot of single mothers, and a few adult children of wealthy parents who didn't see the value of getting their education when they were still living in their parents' homes, but thought differently when the time came for them to make thier own way in the world.

What sort of adult education programs are there in other parts of the world? I have been trying to find out about them in Japan, but no one I work with seems to be able to (or perhaps they don't want to) give me an answer. Is the GED simply a North American phenomenon, or do other countries have similar routes to getting adults back in the educational fold?

OOf, big question Celeste. I'm just completing my last essay for a bachelor of adult education, and have been having thoughts along the same lines. The field probably varies hugely from country to country, from adult literacy to social marketing campaigns to "development". Given the resistance to higher learning (I like the BC examples), not to mention the accessibility problems that obtain the world over, I imagine
that general equivalency is pretty patchily covered Very Happy . Hard to say without some expert info!

Bertrand you asked "Do you think you juts walk in somewhere and get given one?"

As a matter of fact, YES!

Where? China, that's where.

I have been editing English translations of Chinese doctoral thesis. These papers are US 10th grade stuff. They get them published by paying the publisher as opposed to western journals that publish worthy papers for free.

Ever hear of "guangxi"? Ph.D.'s are given in China, not earned. They are paid for through guangxi. Cool

Scot I can psell but I am not too fussy when I post here. I type and post and I am lazy in this fun place. Sorry about the name calling. I will do better in the future, just as soon as you stop acting like a ........
Very Happy

Sherri CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!! THIS IS A PRIVILEGE THAT WAS STOLEN FROM ME WHEN I WAS VERY YOUNG THROUGH PHYSICAL ABUSE.

C76 PT has posted his last!!!!!!! He is gone!!!!!! I have that from the horses mouth, er .... from Dave. No I am not calling Dave a horse. It is an expression in West Virginia.

I don't disbelieve you. I have heard this before. But remember that - to the rest of the world - it is just a piece of (toilet) paper and is not taken at all seriously. In fact, it is not a PhD (by definition). This simply further cements my general case againist China, the Chinese system, and those who take part in it.

Yes, I know. If I had known you were referring to the kitchen sink system I would not have made any comments. I too once was silly enough to apply to mark and grade university-level essays and research projects when I was in Shenzhen and, I must say, even allowing for the fact that the papers were in English and thus in a second (or third, forth, etc.) language, they were, in short, totally pathetic. Nevertheless, one was published; it was self-published which is what I think you mention.

Bertrand there are journals in Honkers that also accept payment to publish papers both in English and Chinese.

Every Uni in China has a journal and either guangxi or cash gets just about anything published.

As to the China Ph.D. I have seen a draft article "China's College Diploma: Can its International Image be Improved?" I think it is in jury review in GB or USA. If it gets published it should be an interesting read for you. I do not remember the author but I think it was a Chinese national.

Celeste

It seems to me that this GED must be a US (or North American) phenomenon. I jad never heard of until I read these posts. As so often our North American cousins fall into the trap of assuming that the rest of the world does things the way they are done in Kansas !

Ah, Mr Scot, how refreshing to hear your dulcet tones again! Smile Im not sure any such assumptions about the universality of the Kansas (or the West Virginia, Linda) GED were being made--- I would be the last to impose my credentials (not that I have any) on others! Now what about those blasted lithium crystals-- we need more power, dammit! Very Happy
