i used to always order the vegetarian meal - even after i stopped being a vegetarian - because i felt it was better quality. but i stopped doing that after a flight on british airways when everyone around me got lovely bacon sandwiches and i got a rotting fruit cup.
but for veggie food, air india is fabulous, and you usually don't have to even special order.
as far as standard plane fare i would have to say the best is air france - recently i had a lovely chicken tarragon, *fresh* bread, wine, champagne, camembert.... and the worst is definitely continental.
