I am thinking about an apartment in Recolletta on Arenalas. Is it going to be a problem going out at night and going downtown. I hear bars close very late. And I am concerned about being able to get home. I hear horror stories about the taxis. Does the subway run all night.

Arenales in Recoleta sounds like a perfect location to me. It shouldnt be a problem at all to move around...its very close to downtown and to interesting spots and bars.

The subway runs only till 23 hs.

Regarding TAXIS I suggest you use your mobile and call radio taxis everytime....they charge the same as regular taxis...I use radio taxi premium...ask me if you want their phone.

suerte

getting a cab here is like getting a cab in any other big city. the VAST majority of the cabs are just fine and there are a few jerks sprinkled in - and it's those stories you hear. not the millions of blah stories of people taking cabs all over the place without any trouble everyday and every night.

look for cabs that say "radio taxi" (any variety) and you'll have no trouble. recoleta is essentially downtown. consider it the "greater downtown area." (it's part of the centro, there's also the microcentro, and palermo is another hotspot that's farther out). there are tons of bars in recoleta (though most are expensive - same goes for the ones in palermo). it's easy to get a cab at any hour of the night, but it's also surprisingly safe to walk around late at night. i won't recommend doing it alone if you're a gal, but i am and i do it all the time and i've never had a problem. the only time it's really tough to get a cab is when it's raining. but yeah, keep a number in your cell just in case.

i recommend investing in a pocket guia-t and learn the bus system. once it starts making sense, it is a very convenient and cheap way to get around - but you may have to experiment a little Wink

The subway closes around 11. You won't be able to take it to the BBQ this Saturday at www.teachingargentina.com I would just grab a cab on Arenales, there are a million. Party starts at 1, see you there?!!
