|
|
My (Istanbul-based) friends and I are trying to figure out good places to explore during the upcoming Ramazan vacation. Four days, limited budget, Western Turkey, preferably near the coast (but not necessarily), and hopefully something of cultural sıgnificance to see (there are enough discos and pubs off Istiklal, thank you very much).
Any great ideas, experiences or horror stories?
I've been thinking maybe Troy and the Gallipoli peninsula...
I thank you in advance, sir or madam.
(Im not sure if this is necessarily a job-related post-- but then, you can't have a vacation without a job, right?) |

Don't go to troy, it's a disappointment. Canakkale, Asoss around that area are worth going to though for a few days.
I think I am going to go to Kars(I'm curious if the places mentioned in 'Snow' actually exist) |

65 views and only one response. Sigh. I think I'll curl up on the couch with a cold pide and an old Newsweek.

Oh, man-- that's no good!
I have a friend who's been raving about Yedi Gl in the Black Sea somewhere, but I haven't been there myself. He claims it's good for a winter vacation, where it's cold outside and you stay snug inside a cabin-y type place that may or may not have a kitchen.
I also like Bursa. There's a *really* nice historical hamam in the Karavansaray Hotel (they built the hotel around the hamam) that's much cheaper and way nicer than any in Istanbul. Also they have Iskender Kebap there. And there's some historical mosque but I've never gone in.
Both places will probably be crowded but it's probably better than the sofa and Newsweek... |

in my mid 20s I spent so much time there that if the owner Turhan was tired and wanted to go home, he'd give me the key to lock up |

In my pre-fatherhood heavy(er) drinking days, I've spent the best part of a holiday in Bar Madrid. |
Ahhhhhh gone are the days of drinking solidly for six days solid.
* Reminisces about drinking Southern Comfort in the bath, then throwing up himself, then drinking some more Sourthern Comfort *

(In faux Spanish accent, with a hint of shadiness): Hmmmm.... what is this Bar Madrid you speak of? It sounds exotic and yet strangely comforting. This I must see...Where to find? and the biras... they are not expensive? These things must I know!! |

The beer isn't the attraction. I'll have some Northern Lights please. |

Visit Bulgaria. Get the sleeper from Sirkeci. Choices : Sofia, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Tryavna, Veliko Turnovo. The train has carriages for Sofia and for Bucharest.
I would say spend the Bayram 'chez moi' but I will not be there ! I am busy doing nothing in another former province of the Ottoman Empire. |
