Does anyone have any experience going from an ARC to a visitor visa? I want to study Chinese but have heard it's nih impossible to get a visitor visa after having a work visa and ARC.

I really don't expect that you would have any trouble at all and in fact I think I have done this myself in the past. You can go to the FAP and cancel your own ARC, leave the country and come back in on a visitors visa.
