Okay, I have been reading on here about ppl and thier limited access to the internet's wonders because China doesn't allow access to certain sights. I have tried these out on my mom's computer at work (US government with firewalls and everything) and they work. So here is a small list of them. Just go to one of the sites and then it will look like (to anyone monitoring from a different computer) that you are not seeing anything that China shouldn't (only the proxy screen) while you are free to surf as you please. You can use it if you just want to maintain privacy so someone can't look through your hard drive or anything, you know what I mean. Here is a list of a few. People, feel free to add more!

With these you should be able to see all news sites and all those banned in CHINA. However no one will know unless they are standing over your shoulder. Try them out, let me know what doesn't work. While I am still here in Canada I can search for Proxy's for the entire Dave's community if need be. While I was in China I had no problems accessing any sites I needed, but I wasn't looking up many news items from foriegn sources. Please guys, add any others they you know work in China. Laughing

Find a proxy server site, then..

Wait for the page to load, then go to tools/internet options/connections and click on LAN setttings. Check the box that says "use a proxy server for your LAN", then choose one of the IP addresses from the above site, type it in to the space provided and type in the port number. Click OK.

You should then be able to access any site you please. I use Internet Explorer for browsing and have found the above method works pretty well. Some of the proxy servers may be down or running slow, so you may have to experiment with a couple before you find one that works for you. Also, the list is frequently updated, so you can't continue using the same proxy server for more than a few hours.

Anonymiser sites do, in fact, get turned off as quickly as they go up courtesy of China's "Great Firewall". So, too, do open proxy servers (except for when they get turned off by administrators annoyed at their unauthorised use!), albeit at a rate that is much, much, much lower than the rate anonymiser sites get turned off.

I would ask, please, that people not post web addresses of sites that share proxy server information in a public forum -- here or anywhere. There are people whose sole job it is to read web sites and find this information so they can block it. If you want to share proxy server information, use email or at the very least PMs on various fora. Do not post the information where it is publicly visible because then everyone, including China's censors, can see it.

As an aside, I have lots of information on where to find anonymous proxy servers for those who may be interested. Please PM or email me if you want the information. I'm willing to share, just not with Beijing's censors.

Yep, those censors are pretty quick. I dialled a proxy server for the first time in months this morning as a section of South China Morning Post was blocked - one which dealt with the after effects of Tiananmen. This in itself shows an increasing sophistication in the filtering mechanisms being used. Previously, the entire site would have been blocked, not just the critical section. So, I got in, read the first story, but then no more; just a very rapid display of " this page is....." So I think the censor had actually cut my proxy server as I was using it - a personal first!
