Hi guys,

I'm a Australia who will be going o Japan under a working holiday visa. I heard that on the Working Holiday visa you need to change jobs every three months.

How stirct are the immigration authorities on this and will they re-new your visa after six months if they see you working in the same job for that long.

It just seems to be a real hassle changing jobs every three months just to satisfy this condition.

If anyone has a experience with this or could provide me with a little more information that would be great.

Cheers

You don't have to change jobs every three months. Search this site for working holiday questions. There is a wealth of information.

No need to change jobs. WHV allows you now to work full time for short periods or part time for up to 18 months (6 months followed by 2 renewals for Australians. WHV is not the same as a work visa and it designed to allow you to experience and travel japan while working. Once you are in the country no one will check your jobs, unless you are doing something illegal and working outside your visa status e.g. working in a nightclub.

Where did you hear that rumour from? A mate in bar in Australia?

I was told this information after I phoned the Japanese consulate in Sydney.

They said you have to change jobs every 3 months on the WHV.

Anyway thanks for the advice guys as that's a bit of a relief.

Cheers

Maybe, I'm not immigration or the consulate though and if you get a language school teaching job you will be offered a one year contract (even if your initial visa is 6 months)

In Japan there is a lot of "honne and tatemae" (an expression that doesnt have a direct translation in English). The closest thing to it is "appearances" vs reality. What they want you to believe on the surface, and what the actual "essence" is or what their real feeling is. Its not that they are lying to you but its a way of saving face for them.

You have a lot of people coming over and thinking WHV is like a full time work visa, people come and get a full time job working somewhere and teaching English etc. The WHV according to the website says that it is a holiday and travel visa which lets you work part or full time to fund your stay and experience the country, not just work here and earn money. It is NOT a teaching visa. They dont want to give you the impression that you can just come over and get a full time job for 18 months, so they will say its temporary and part time and you have to change your job every three months. It lets them off the hook, but every one knows that changing your job every three month is totally impractical, considering you have to give 2 weeks notice and there are not that many jobs around for WHV holders. It may take you a month to find a job and then you would have to quit a month or two later. It doesnt make sense.
