Abufletcher, your knowledge in this area is obviously extensive, so I appreciate your replies. This is a good way to detertermine if the problem is just usual shy behaviour. I will check out some activities that they can do together. Thanks again.

In My (extremely) Humble Opinion.

All of the above plus try and get some flash cards made that do not require a vocal response.

ie. 'stand up' 'sit down', 'open your books' close your books' etc.

Understanding comes before speaking.

If they have (developed) problems with speaking English, let it go (for a while). Concentrate on understanding aand response.

Go right back to square one. 'What is your name?' 'My name is ....' etc.

Never take it personally. I am just finishing a one year stint with all kinds of kids at all abilities. After my last class, one of my student's mother's passes me an envelop, inside is a little drawing and a "Thank you" from her daughter. One little girl is no longer scared of english classes.

ps. Her english isn't bad either, but that's just my ego boost. Her mum is happy because her daughter is happy.
