The intended victim was a rich local, so I assume it was some sort of personal vendetta. But, who knows? It's not like I can check the Abu Dhabi police archives.
By the way, does anyone recall the Palace coup in Sharjah during the late "80's? Tanks on the streets, the military on high alert, armed guards in the lobbies of all the big hotels, the same pathetic warnings from the embassies. Things got so out of hand that the illustrious Gulf News actually head to admit this was happening. "It is after all, a simple family argument..." Then the counter coup "Our Leader is wise beyond human comprehension..." And finally, the whole thing is resolved "A just and equitable solution has been achieved." What exactly?
I don't know how complacent one should ever be in this part of the world. I first arrived in the Gulf on March 20th, 1987. The same week our good friend Saddam Hussein accidently had a US naval ship bombed off the coast of Bahrain. The Reagan administration, the State Department and the US Embassy all had profuse explanations "These things do happen..." "It is a war zone after all." Less than 3 and a half years later--Well, I don't have to tell you guys how the story ends.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss... probably more often than not...

I wasn't in the Gulf by the 80's, but I did get to enjoy the riots in Cairo in the late 80's when the riot police rioted and burned a few hotels and 'casinos' and some neighborhoods had running gunfights. It will all get a chapter in the novel...

If that's your assumption, why did you introduce the incident as counter-evidence to the contention that people are generally happy?

Or am I misreading your intentions?

Isn't that your hobby BD? Laughing Laughing

I thought it obviously referred to 'one person' - didn't seem generalized to others... Not to mention that in situations like this, we almost never learn the real truth. He did say that he was speculating about the cause.
