Just wondering if any of you have attended or will attend the MEXTESOL conferences. This year the conference is in Zacatecas and I was thinking about attending. Just wondering what the meetings are like and if it is worth going........thanks! |

I can't attend this year, and couldn't last year, but attended in 2003, 2002, 2001. I really enjoy conferences. But choose which sessions you attend carefully as there is a lot of variety in level and quality. There are sessions for and by teachers of all levels. If its not clear from the blurb, pop in early and ask the presenter. So ten minutes into it you don't find yourself in the middle of a room full of kindergarden teachers talking about teaching kids and you've never taught kids before. (or other such situation) Its three days and pretty full on. The highlights this year will probably be Donald Freeman, Luke Prodromou and Ylda Farr'e. I'm sorry to miss it!
Don't be shy when talking to the publisher reps at their displays, they can give you free sample books, but have gotten much more stingy in the last couple of years! |

Hi Melee,
I'm trying to figure out the logistics of my transportation/arrival to the Metesol conference in Zacatecas, and I was hoping you could give me some advice, since I've never been to a TESOL conference before!
If I arrived late on day one and missed the keynote addresses and plenary (what is that?), would I be missing the best part? Will they even let you in if you arrive a couple hours late?
Thanks!

By the way, Guy, the drive is apparently 8 hours. I found a flight (1 hour 10 min.) on Azteca that costs $2,300, including taxes (about $1,000 less than Mexicana) in case you're interested. |

Thanks for the tip. I won't be making it afteral since my associate here isn't going. I'll try next year.
Is that a round trip flight? I usually fly Aviacsa for domestic, but the price sounds about the same. |

Yes, that's round trip. Mexicana was nearly $4,000 two minutes ago, and Aeromar had a great schedule, but was $7,000! Can you believe it?! I haven't checked Aviasca. I'll do that right now. |

Nope, they don't have service to Zacatecas. Hey, Guy, when you were thinking about going, had you picked out a hotel yet? |

I'm not going at all, and hadn't even checked into flights. I was going to drive up, but abonded the idea maybe two weeks ago.
I would more than likely have stayed with my sister-in-law who lives in Aguascalientes anyway. Sorry, can't recommend a hotel to you... |

Not to worry about being let in! One year, in Monterrey, the way you went about picking up your registration packets was so unorganized that loads of people missed the opening plenary.
A Plenary is sort of a highlighted talk, if you notice from the schedule (available here for all you lurkers) is a big talk, there are not other talks going on at the same time, by a big name speaker. The speakers have usually been invited (and have some sponser paying their expenses), were as the regular speakers have submitted proposals and been selected to talk.
If its worth missing them its up to you. Its kind of expensive, but its also rather exhausting to attend it all anyway... |

Thanks, Melee. I think my flt. would get in just early enough to make it to the 12:00 plenary (thanks for the explanation!). OR, I could fly in the day before and arrive early, but that would entail missing another day of work and paying another night of hotel! Hmm, decisions, decisions! |

Have you been to Zacatecas? Nice looking town but t doesn't look like there's a lot to do there with an extra day save for visiting a couple of museums, or riding the cable car. |

Nope, I've never been there before. I went ahead and got my ticket one day early, just because I hate being rushed and figured since I'm already spending on the plane ticket, I might as well check the place out. I do believe you are right, though, since there is very little info about Zacatecas online! I think I'll have fun anyway, and I'm definately looking forward to the conference. |

Can't remember the name or the street, but there's an awesome cafe across from the main cathedral. They specialize in turkish coffees. Good place to kick back and watch the pedestrian traffic and write poetry. |
