I know this is a bit off-topic but does Vietnam have beaches comparable to Thailand? I heard there are lots of nice islands in teh South. Are they white sand beach Islands like Thailand? Any photos or links to photos would be appreciated. Photos I've found so far on teh web aren't that impressive. I wish to go to Vietnam to teach so just wonderd on how nice the beaches are for my weekends away. Very Happy

The beaches are ok in Vietnam. Have travelled to Nha Trang and Hoi An, and they are both ok.

What was not so pleasant, though, is the way the merchants (mostly women and children) pester you on the beaches to buy their stuff. In Vietnam the hawkers are worse than Thailand and Cambodia - by far...it is the Viet. mentality - 'make a buck at all costs.' Because of this it is hard to relax on the beaches in Vietnam, at least that was the experience one had.

Hey London, I just returned from a week down at Phu Quoc. It was great water (30+meter visibility) with blue fish, orange fish, parrot fish, purple anaemones (sic?) etc.. Very very nice. The other side of it is the service. Typical of VN, soda lemon ice comes half the time w/o sugar, you never get catsup w/ your fries and then you have to explain for an hour what you want etc.. In other words, terrible service. So it was a 50/50 deal. My wife and I both flew (1 mil each return from SGN) and we stayed at a 4 star resort (457US for all I could eat and drink w/ a nice beach room). Total about 600US.

Having been in Thailand a lot, I would recommend going there. You still get the nice water and beaches, and you can easily eat local. The food will be a lot cheaper than at the resort. Plus, people don't have that stare typical of the VN. A flight until the end of the month from SGN to BKK is 99US on Lufthansa.

Have fun!

I enjoyed some great beaches while in Vietnam. Very isolated and no tourists. They might be covered in seaweed, dead animals, etc. but it is much more natural than those cleanly swept beaches in Thailand.

Can anyone recommend some good places to relax in Vietnam? I am thinking about heading over there for a month this spring with a young family. Beach areas would be nice.

Sorry, not trying to hijack this thread.
