| ....that I'm sure has been asked before that will p**s off all the regular forum users with their laptops in Starbucks who spend hours and hours a week on this site. Anyway before I alienate everybody reading, what's a typical monthly wage in Taiwan? For example here in Thailand most teachers (backpackers) earn between 25, 000 (500 Euro) and 35, 000 Baht (700 Euro) a month. Anyone with a Celta, a degree and some experience and without dreadlocks and a bone through their nose can earn 50, 000 (1000 Euro) a month for full-time work. What would the comparable monthly wages be over there? |

Generally speaking only a degree in education and/or teaching experience in Taiwan will get you a higher than average starting wage. Other forms of certification are not generally given much consideration.
I think that you should aim for around NTD550-600 per hour, or NTD60,000 per month for 25 teaching hours a week. Anything more than this would be a bonus but you should consider why that school is giving you a higher than average starting wage. There may be a reason. |

An ARC is an Alien Resident Certificate. It is for all intents and purposes your ID card while you are in Taiwan and it names your legal employer/s. You can only work for the employer/s named on this card.
The process to becoming legal here is:
1. Get a work permit
2. Change your visa into a Resident Visa
3. Get an ARC.
The school can help you with much of this. |

Clark forgot one step; Getting a health check. It's the first thing you have to do. Expect eye, blood pressure, blood tests and a chest x-ray. It'll cost less than $1000NT ($660 I think) and takes 8 working days if you pass everything.
The blood test is checking for AIDS and Hepatitus, possibly for opiates and barbituates as well. It doesn't usually check for THC, but some recent events may have changed that.
Also, you don't have to wait until you've been hired to take this step. Do it right away. ---The certificate is good for 3 months and must be included with your documentation sent to the CLA to process your work permit.
The most popular spot (in Taipei) is The Jenai Hospital on the corner of Renai and Fuxing. Take MRT Blue or Brown line to ChongXiao Fuxing and walk 1 major block south. It's across the street from the Howard Plaza Hotel on the southeastern corner. Youactually have to go east on Renai about 50 meters as it's not directly on the corner.
And, imo, you will make more money here than Thailand. The mean salary is higher and the value of the NTD vs the Baht is higher. The cost of living, unfortunately is also higher, but there are plenty of ways to keep it reasonable.

| The cost of living in Taiwan is more comparable to singapore than thailand - you may certainly get much more money in taiwan than in Thailand but it wont go anywhere near as far and you most certainly wont be able to live as well as you can cheaply in thailand. |
